First: Before You Cross the Street…
January 19, 2025
Luke 4:1-13

“You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Luke 3:22

Because God loves you, there’s one who hates you.

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
(Luke 4:1-2)

Tests can be very good.
Temptation is a test that is not good.

One is useful to help you, the other intends to hurt you, but says that it wants to help you.

Temptation will question your identity as God’s beloved child.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
(Luke 4:3)

Temptation will question your identity as God’s beloved child.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
(Luke 4:3)

Who you believe yourself to be will influence the person you become.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
(Luke 4:4)
“...but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
(Deuteronomy 8:3)

Temptation will rationalize.

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
(Luke 4:5-7)

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
(Luke 4:8)

“...so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.”
(Deuteronomy 6:3)

Temptation tests God’s goodness.

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
(Luke 4:9-11)

Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
(Luke 4:12)

“...as you did in Massah.”
(Deuteronomy 6:16)

In the testing, don’t listen to the voice of temptation.
Listen to the Voice of the Father.

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit...
(Luke 4:13-14)
