The Text in Context

"For the Jew, this confession was the acknowledgment that Jesus was God and that He was the promised Savior. As such, He was to be trusted in and to be obeyed. The implications of this confession for the Gentile were also profound. The Gentile was accustomed to thinking of Caesar as 'Lord.' When a Gentile came to faith in Jesus, He recognized Him to be in the place of highest authority. It meant that obedience to Caesar must be subordinate to obedience to Christ. Because the Roman emperors viewed this as atheism, many Christians were put to death for their confession. Neither Jew nor Gentile could take these words lightly. Their culture would not allow it. Growth Group / Personal Reflection Questions

1. Romans 10:2 describes the Israelites having zeal for God but lacking knowledge. How can we guard against having misplaced zeal in our own faith lives? What role does seeking truth play in ensuring our zeal is aligned with God’s will?

2. Romans 10:3-4 highlight the difference between pursuing righteousness through the law versus submitting to God’s righteousness through Christ. How do we sometimes rely on our own good works instead of trusting Christ for our righteousness? How might this be avoided?

3. In verses Romans 10:9-10, Paul emphasizes confessing with the mouth and believing in the heart. How do these two aspects (confession and belief) work together in our journey of faith? Why are both important?

4. Romans 10:12 declares that there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile because the same Lord is Lord of all. How does this truth challenge or encourage us in how we view and share the gospel with others?

5. What does it mean to you that "Jesus is Lord?"
