Closer Than You Think - Doné van Eyk

Closer Than You Think - Doné van Eyk

We all go through seasons of life where we feel lost, alone, or disconnected—much like David did in the Bible. Even when we feel that God is distant, the truth is that He cares deeply for us and never leaves us. Our feelings aren’t always facts, and despite how things appear, God is closer than we think.

1. Recognising our feelings of being lost

Psalm 13:1
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”

- We can all relate to feeling lost in some area of our lives—whether physically or emotionally. David often felt abandoned or confused, yet he turned those feelings into prayers.
2. David’s journey through despair

Psalm 22:1
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?”

- After defeating Goliath, David experienced both success and extreme hardship. He fled from Saul, hid in caves, and faced betrayal; yet in every low point, David cried out to God.
3. God’s closeness in our valleys

Psalm 23:1-3
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”

- Feelings are not facts. Although David felt forsaken, he still trusted God’s goodness.
- God hears our cries even when He seems silent; we must keep seeking Him in faith.
4. Turning toward God, not away

James 4:8
“Draw near to God, He will draw near to us.”

- Times of struggle often tempt us to distance ourselves from God. Scripture urges us to draw near to Him, trusting that He draws near to us in return.
Remember:

No matter how lost or alone we feel, God never abandons us. Like David, we can be honest about our struggles but remain confident in God’s unchanging character. He truly is closer than we think.
