Hope for 2025 - Phil Kendon

Hope for 2025 - Phil Kendon

There are so many things that we express a hope for that we actually have no control over nor do we know whether these things will happen or not. It is mostly just wishful thinking or a hope that our positive thinking will move things in a positive direction. But is there actually a basis for hope? Biblical hope does not depend on the circumstances at all. In fact, Christians are urged to hope in God even when there is no positive side to the circumstances of their lives. Hope means choosing to trust God and to foster our relationship with him because we know that he is the source of everything we need and he is the fulfilment of everything we hope for.

1. The biblical definition of hope

- Hope is defined in the bible as waiting for God (like Noah waited for the flood waters to recede and like a farmer waits for the seed to grow into a vine that produces fruit).
2. The God of hope

- We believe in a God of love, of power, or justice – and also a God of hope.
3. As you trust him

Romans 8:31–32 (NIV)
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

- God has already given us Jesus and he is trustworthy with everything else we need.
4. By the power of the Holy Spirit

- As we foster our relationship with Jesus, God works in our hearts to make our hope secure.
5. Joy, peace and overflowing hope

- As we foster our relationship with Jesus, we will experience the quality of life we aspire to – one full of joy, peace and hope regardless of our circumstances.
Let's Apply It:

Romans 15:13 (NIV)
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
