Jesus Our Peace
Micah 5:2-5

Main Point
Jesus is our peace, a shepherd who brings security

Context
Coming judgment on oppressors, rulers, prophets (chs. 1-3)
Restoration of God’s house through His ruler (chs. 4-5)
Coming judgment and future restoration (chs. 6-7)

Passage
A little city gives birth to a great and ancient ruler (v. 2)
Coming from old, from ancient days hearkens way back
To Bethlehem and the birth of David
To creation and Jesus in the beginning (John 1:1)
He shall give up and then gather his brothers (v. 3)
Give up indicates the scattering of Israel
The woman in labor most likely parallels Mary/Jesus (Rev 12:2, 5)
The gathering of His brothers may be the Gentiles (John 10:16)
He shall stand and shepherd securely in strength (v. 4)
Shepherding is a key aspect of God’s care (Psa 23; John 10:11)
Security/settling is a mark of good shepherding
Jesus does this in the strength/majesty of the LORD (Psa 96:6)
He shall be great (to the ends of the earth)
He shall be their peace
Peace—shalom—
completeness,
safety, soundness (in body),
welfare, health, prosperity,
peace, quiet, tranquility, contentment
peace, friendship (with God and others)

Application
Jesus is gathering His brothers…are you one? (Mark 3:35; Heb 2:11)
Jesus is the good shepherd…are you allowing Him to shepherd you?
Are you dwelling securely in him? (John 15:5, 9)
Are you dwelling in His strength? (2Co 12:9)
Is He your peace? (John 14:27)
