Luke 1:26-30 NLT In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!
Scripture shows us that God’s Favor is something good and desirable:

Zechariah 8:21-22 “The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the Lord and to seek the Lord of hosts; I myself am going.’ Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the Lord”
But Mary’s response to Gabriel conveys anxiety:

Luke 1:29-30 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!
In the Torah, God’s Favor comes with Blessing, but also with Challenges
God’s favor is a gift with a purpose: so that we can withstand the mission He is setting us on.

Luke 1:31-35, 38 NLT You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God… 38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
The purpose God has of Mary is something she could never fulfill in her own strength. This is why she needs His favor.
The Favor of God is the GIFT of His Presence for the fulfillment of His Purpose.
The phrase “Favor of God” is used far less in the New Testament, but we do find it in Luke, pertaining to Jesus:

Luke 2:40 NLT There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

Luke 2:52 NLT Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.
Luke 4:17 -19 NLT The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!
Throughout history, God’s would bestow His favor on specific people, at specific moments for a specific purpose.

But in Luke 4, Jesus declares “that the time of the Lord’s favor has come."
Jesus it makes possible for anyone to receive God’s favor, and for Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace to rest on those who respond as Mary did.

Luke 2: 8-14 NIV And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
