Why did Jesus come?

Jesus came to give hope.
Jesus came to give peace.
Jesus came to give joy.

Jesus came to give love.
1 John 4:7–12 (ESV) - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
1 John 4:7–8 (ESV) - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

What is true about God?
· God’s essence is love.

What flows from God?
1. His thought and action are entirely rooted in love.

Psalm 136:1 (ESV) - Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV) - the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

John 3:16 (ESV) - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
1 John 4:9 (ESV) - In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

Romans 5:8 (ESV) - …God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 2:1–2 (ESV) - And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
1 John 4:10 (ESV) 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Why do we suffer

The suffering we experience is the result of our sin.

We must keep in mind the whole character of God – love and just and righteous.

He entered into suffering with us.

He didn’t stay in our suffering – he gives to us a hope beyond the suffering.

John 16:33 (ESV) - I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

God does love so much that he allows suffering to go on so that one more would be saved. If God entered in and dealt with our sin as it deserves, just imagine what that would be like – talk about suffering!

He promises no more suffering.

2 Corinthians 4:17 (ESV) - For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
1 John 4:11-12 (ESV) 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

Your willingness to love others is evidence of your relationship God.
What flows from God?
2. His love flows into the thinking and action of those who have been born of Him and know Him.

Mark 12:30–31 (ESV) - And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The full purpose of God sending His Son is complete when His sacrificial love is humbly, visibly and courageously expressed in our relationships with one another.

Ephesians 3:14–19 (ESV) - For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
