Not Alone: The Story of Joseph

Have you ever felt like you were all alone? On the outside? No-one understands? Ever had to celebrate by yourself? The Bible says we are not alone. We might be lonely but we are never alone. From Genesis to the final chapter in Revelation, reoccurring themes say that God loves us, desires a relationship with us and is with us. Even when we’re alone. Sounds like a contradiction, doesn’t it? This Christmas, we’ll look at the lives of characters in the Christmas story that encountered Jesus when they least expected it.

The OT prophecies indicated that the Messiah would be born of a woman (Gen 3:15)

a. Of the seed of Abraham (Gen 22:18)
b. Through the tribe of Judah (Gen 49:10)
c. Through the lineage of David
Another, “Son of David” will rule forever and build a lasting House. Jesus Christ, the Son of David in Matthew 21:9.
The Curse of one of David’s descendants, Jeconiah
If Jesus is a descendant of Jeconiah, how can He be the Messiah?

1. Luke (3:31) gives the lineage of David through King David’s other son, Nathan.

a. Jesus is the legal Son of David Through Joseph,
b. Jesus is the physical Son of David Through Mary

2. Why does that matter?

a. Jesus fulfills the covenant that says the Messiah will be a descendent of King David AND He does not violate the curse since Joseph was not his physical father
i. He was conceived by a virgin!
ii. The sin-virus of mankind was not passed to him
iii. He meets all the qualifications for the Messiah!

Jesus Christ is the only Jew alive who can prove His claims to the throne of David! All the other records were destroyed when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in AD70! Warren Wiersbe
Joseph and Mary were chosen by God to play these roles in the story.

a. They will be able to accomplish His purposes through His work in their lives

b. You and I gave been chosen by God to play a role in His story.
i. It will not always be easy.
ii. We will not always feel qualified. Or ready.
iii. But he knows that you can accomplish His purposes with his help.

Wherever God guides, God provides.
God reveals next steps to His people, not in their time but in His time.

1. Not when they need it but when His time is right!
2. His time is always right on time.

Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive
4 But when [in God’s plan] the proper time had fully come AMP
The name Jesus: “Savior”.

a. Comes from the Hebrew name: “Joshua”. (Jehovah is salvation)

b. He is Jesus the Christ
i. Jesus is His human name
ii. Christ is His official title—The Anointed One

c. Immanuel: God with us
i. Isaiah 7:14; 8:8
He was born a Boy; conceived from the Holy Spirit; born of a virgin; He is Jesus; Who will save His people from their sins; and He is Immanuel, God with us!
