Big Idea: Christmas reminds us that God is still fulfilling all His promises.
I. Promises Fulfilled – The First Advent (Lk. 2:8-20)
A. How is it that a child born over 2,000 years ago to a poor Jewish couple in a sleepy town in Israel can cause such a stir today? Because this is no ordinary child, but the fulfillment of God’s promises and the Savior of all peoples who put their faith in Him (vv. 8-11).
B. In the angels announcement, we see:
1. Good news (vv. 10-14; Rom. 1:16-17) – This is what Gospel means. It is a message of salvation and hope that is a cause for celebration, praise and great joy
2. Today, a Savior (v. 11; cf. Matt. 1:20-21; Jn. 1:14) - Redemption has come; God the Son has taken on flesh that we may be saved from our sins.
3. And on earth, peace (v. 14) - Real peace is not merely the absence of conflict, rather it is being in relationship with God through Messiah Jesus.
C. The response of the shepherds went from fear to awe and
worship. Christmas should invoke a sense of worship in us as
well. But it should also fill us with anticipation and hope!
II. Promises Await – The Second Advent (1 Thes. 4:13-18)
A. Christmas is not just a celebration of the first Advent; it is also a reminder of how we eagerly anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises in the second Advent:
1. A promise of hope (vv. 13-15)
2. A promise to encourage us (vv. 16-18).
B. Christmas reminds us that we still have some presents to unwrap. Gifts like righteousness, renewal and healing await us. Jesus will return to usher in the restoration of all things.
C. As we celebrate Christmas this year, let us rejoice in the wonderful gifts God has given us in Christ, but also look with eager anticipation to His return (cf. Rev. 22:20).
