Matthew 7:13-23
Four Choices make One Point
7:13-14 - Two roads to choose
7:15-20 - Two kinds of teachers to hear
7:21-23 - Two kinds of disciples to be
7:24-27 Two kinds of foundations to have
Will you follow Jesus or not?
Warning: Wrong Way
7:13-14 - be lost with crowd: destruction
7:15-20 - like false posers: cut down to burn
7:21-23 - be self-deluded: excluded unknowns
7:24-27 - bad foundations: total collapse
The narrow gate
“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hellis broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

Jesus is the gate, the way into God’s Kingdom
John 10 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

The difficult road is the discipleship of following Jesus
Matthew 8 “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.”
False teachers with bad fruit (the deceivers)
“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

= religious leaders claiming to speak for God but don’t, they don’t actually know Him…
Good Fruit in Matthew’s Gospel
3:8 - changed behavior that demonstrates repentance
13 - a lifestyle of responding to God’s Word and producing good
21-25 - God expects us to be fruitful, to be faithful stewards for Him

Good Fruit in NT letters
Galatians 5:16-24 “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives…”
Philippians 1:11 “the fruit of your salvation, the righteous character produced by Christ”
Colossians 1:10 “and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit.”
What about genuine Christians? = what evidence do I have to show?
2 Cor 5 “For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”

We are saved by faith, but as Christians we will be evaluated by works
James 2:17 “So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.”

We are saved by Christ, but Christ saves us into discipleship that serves God and others

Key word runs thru this section = poieo = “to do” translated do, produce, put into practice
True and False Disciples
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

False disciple =
I never knew you = there is no family relationship as God’s covenant people

True Disciple =
Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.
