Optimism tends to be based on the notion that there is enough evidence out there that allows us to think things are going to be better; it’s much more rational, and deeply secular. Whereas hope looks at the evidence and says, ‘It doesn’t look good at all, but I’m going to make a leap of faith. I’m going to go beyond the evidence in the attempt to dream new possibilities. Hope is based on dreams that become contagious enough to allow us to engage in heroic actions against the odds. No guarantee whatsoever." That is hope.
