Dig Deeper:
1. It’s officially the most wonderful time of the year as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. What are you looking forward to in this Christmas season?
2. Do you have a physical place where you collect clutter? Do you have to make room in that space? How do you do it?
3. What would you say is the most important part of the Christmas season?
4. How would you define hope? How is it powerful? How is it fragile?
5. What is the opposite of hope?
6. Read Romans 15:13. How is hope that comes from God Himself different from other kinds of hope?
7. Describe how our fear, worry, and doubt is a natural, or worldly response, to the world around us. Describe how hope is supernatural.
8. If we need to make room for hope, what do we need to move out of the way? What are the things that typically take up the space that hope should fill in our hearts?
9. Read Romans 5:1-2. What does it mean to be justified by faith? What does it mean to “boast in the hope of the glory of God”?
10. Read Psalm 118:6. How does hope conquer fear? Describe a time when you were afraid, but hope conquered in the end.
11. Read Romans 5:3-4. What does it mean to “boast in our afflictions”? What does affliction produce immediately? What does it ultimately produce?
12. Is it easy to boast in our afflictions? Why or why not?
13. Describe the pathway to hope: affliction – endurance - proven character – hope. Describe a time in your life where you’ve seen this happen.
14. What excites you most about the hope of Heaven?
15. Read Romans 5:5. Why does Paul say, “this hope”? How is this hope different than other types of hope?
16. What is your reaction to the fact that “God’s love has been poured out in our hearts”? What images come to mind when you think of love being poured out?
17. How does hope help us look beyond our current circumstances to the glory, hope, and good promised to us in Christ?
18. What is one step you can take today to step in to this hope today?

Live It Out:

Because Jesus holds my future, I can live with hope today. I may not know what I will face between now and eternity, but because I know what awaits me in eternity, there is nothing that I cannot face.

Look up scripture and list out all the ways in which hope….
1. Conquers fear
2. Overcomes discouragement
3. Replaces disappointment

Reread Romans 5:1-5 and spend time with God in prayer. Thank Him for the peace we have with Him through Jesus Christ. Thank Him for Jesus. Ask for opportunities to “boast in the hope of the glory of God.” Whatever is afflicting you today, pray that God uses it to ultimately produce hope in you. Thank Him for the Holy Spirit and that His “love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”
