The golden era of prosperity in Israel was nearly lost because of 1 of David’s sons

Adonijah looked great but his heart was corrupt

He had no calling of God on his life, we read of no relationship with the Lord!

His father was the sweet psalmist of Israel-- Your decision to follow God is ultimately between God and you.

VS 9 Adonijah offers sacrifices in an attempt to legitimize the anointing of God that is absent. He invites all His bro’s, the king’s sons and all the men of Judah.

a. They are not discerning
b. They do not ask questions
c. The godly men are not there!

i. Perhaps there was a big crowd of people, but God is not there!
ii. They met @ a place called the “Serpent’s stone”
iii. He does not include Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men nor Solomon his brother.
Nathan makes a move

1. There is a time to pray and there is a time to act.

GETMO is the stage where you get maximum impact for a sustainable amount of investment. Work on something until it’s good enough to move on.
All the while Solomon is chillin’ in the palace when he gets called to the throne!
Sometimes God changes things fast!
The altar was the place of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

a. He thought they would be safe by grabbing hold of the corner posts of the altar of burnt offerings.
b. His problem is that he didn’t run to God until after he got caught.
c. We hear nothing of a relationship with God before this.
i. Had he sought God at the beginning he wouldn’t have tried to usurp the throne.
Adonijah fears for his life and expects his brother to kill him. He knows he has committed treason.

When anybody sees how awful they truly are when compared to the perfection of God, fear is a natural response!
1. Solomon, the anointed King doesn’t need to exact judgment on his brother because God has raised him up to be the king!

a. He has the power to do so but chooses not to.
b. Sometimes, forgiving someone for a personal attack shows more strength than exacting judgment

2. Adonijah’s whole life changed in vs 53

a. And he came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

i. In vs5: he is exalting himself
ii. Now he is bowing down

b. Solomon treated Adonijah with loving-kindness that he didn’t deserve.
i. Adonijah would not have done the same for Solomon.

3. A sure-fire remedy to self-promotion is thanksgiving!
