Most people don’t give God thanks. They don’t give God thanks because they don’t believe God did anything to be thankful for.
The Bible tells us in Romans 1:20,
And even in those times in which we did notice how good and generous God has been to us, it doesn’t take long before we forget about it and move back into living a life of ingratitude.
Why? Because we are so prone to forget what God has done for us.
The reason so many don’t give thanks is that they forget. That is why David says to himself:
But how can a person bless God? A person blesses God by remembering all that God hasdone and thanking him for it.
David listed some of the things God gave for which he was grateful.
1. Thank God for your Existence
The Psalm starts off…A Psalm of David. In order for there to be a Psalm of David, there had to be a David. There never had to be a David, but there was one. There is a you, and there never had to be one.
2. Thank God for Forgiving You. Ps 103:3 Who pardons all your iniquities,
David needed forgiveness. Adultery. Murder. Surely David burned with shame and he must
have died a little inside each time he thought of what he had done. He could not take it back. He could not fix it. All he could do was to call on God and ask forgiveness.
When he did, God sent the prophet Nathan to pronounce over him, “The Lord has taken away your sin!”
Where did He take your sin?
3. Thank God for Healing You. Ps 103:3b Who heals all your diseases;
The simple meaning of this is that whenever and wherever there has been healing, it was God who did it.
Later David writes in this Psalm.
Ps 103:13-14 Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.
And do not limit this healing to physical healing alone. David said God heals all your diseases, including those of mind and soul.
4. Thank God for Protecting You. Ps 103:4a Who redeems your life from the pit,
For David, the “pit” was the place of death and destruction, and “redeem” meant not so much bringing back his life from that realm as keeping him from it.
You are alive today because God has protected you from danger and death. All the way from your earliest days you have been a walking miracle. Often when you were least aware of it, God preserved you from deadly accidents and lethal illnesses.
5. Thank God for Loving You. Ps 103:4b Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
The Hebrew word for “crown” comes from a root that means “to circle, to surround, or to hem in.” David blessed God by praising him for his all-encompassing, all-surrounding love.
David also writes in this Psalm.
And it is that love that ensures the truth of
And because of that truth,
This is something that can only be done if we believe that God loves us and is in full control.
6. Thank God for Satisfying You. Ps 103:5a Who satisfies your years with good things,
God fills every longing and meets people’s deepest desires. Praise his name!
7. Thank God for Strengthening You. Ps 103:5b So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
