Jean Valjean, my brother, you no longer belong to evil. With this silver, I have bought your soul. I’ve ransomed you from fear and hatred. Now go, and become an honest man.

Grace makes space for growth.
We were created with a purpose.
God is inviting you to follow Jesus and become the best version of yourself along the way.
Grace is the only environment in which genuine transformation can happen.
Perfectionism gives way to progress.
Comparison gives way to calling.
Competition gives way to compassion.
Comparison gives way to calling.
Competition gives way to compassion.
Perfectionism is a self-destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought: If I look perfect, live perfectly, work perfectly, I can avoid or minimize shame, blame, and judgment.

So much of our unhappiness comes from comparing our lives, our friendships, our loves, our commitments, our duties, our bodies and our sexuality to some idealized and non-Christian vision of things which falsely assures us that there is a heaven on earth. When that happens, and it does, our tensions begin to drive us mad, in this case to a cancerous restlessness.

Each one of us has some kind of vocation. We are all called by God to share in His life and in His Kingdom. Each one of us is called to a special place in the Kingdom. If we find that place we will be happy. If we do not find it, we can never be completely happy. For each one of us, there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny, according to God’s will, to be what God wants us to be.

In America, the land of competition, the language of success is aggressive and filled with violent images. Here we might describe another’s successes by saying things like “He is killing it” or “She is crushing it” or “He is slaying the competition.” There is truth embedded in that language. To win, we sometimes have to crush those underneath us. And this can move from language to reality when our ambition causes us to compete with those we are called to serve.
