Big Idea: Thankfulness grows as we learn the importance of contentment and giving.
I. The Importance of Contentment (vv. 10-13)
A. Paul faced many challenges in his ministry calling, including frequent imprisonment (cf. 2 Cor. 11:23-29). Yet even though Paul is writing the Philippian church from prison, he expresses contentment. And this contentment led to a thankful attitude that appreciated others and gave glory to God.
B. In the struggle to find contentment, this passage reminds us that:
1. Contentment is learned (vv. 11-12) – Contentment is like a muscle in that it grows and develops as we trust in the Lord.
2. Contentment is less about circumstances and more about the presence of the Lord (vv. 11-12; cf. Ps. 23:4-5).
3. Contentment is about relying on God’s supernatural supply and strength (v. 13).
C. Paul’s experiences and hardships taught him the value of trusting in Jesus and in His presence and provision, and these tribulations also grew His faith and his hope (cf. Rom. 5:1-5).
II. The Importance of Giving (vv. 14-19)
A. Just as contentment is important to a thankful attitude, so is giving. Becoming a generous, giving people is essential to growing in thankfulness and being conformed into the image of Christ.
B. We see Paul stress three things here:
1. Take the opportunity to give (vv. 10, 15).
2. Take the opportunity to receive (vv. 15-18).
3. Remember, God will supply (vv. 19-20).
C. Growing in generosity and thankfulness go together. Our generous giving not only helps to serve other’s needs, but it also brings glory to God and pleases Him as well (cf. Matt 25:35- 40).
