A LOOK AT COMMUNION…

1. What is Communion (or the Lord's Supper)?
2. Why do we do it?
3. What should we do each time we take Communion?
1. WHAT IS IT?...

-- It is called the “Lord’s Supper” or “Communion”
-- Established by Jesus, mentioned in 3 Gospels (night he was betrayed, w/his disciples, passover meal)

MATTHEW 26:26-28 CSB
26 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

MARK 14:22-24 CSB
22 As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.”

LUKE 22:19-20 CSB
19 And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

-- It is a Memorial for those who have been saved, forgiven, redeemed by Jesus’ life, death, burial and resurrection (a time we remember Jesus life and death through eating the bread and drinking the cup)
-- It is not a Sacrament (we call it an ordinance along with baptism), the bread and cup have no power to forgive sin, to extend grace, it is a symbol only
-- Who can participate? It is not for everyone…it is for those who are a Follower/Disciple of Jesus…
2. WHY DO WE DO IT?...

-- Jesus said to share this meal, regularly
-- We take communion to
1. REMEMBER JESUS' life and death and
2. To PROCLAIM HIS DEATH (the gospel) until he comes again

-- Creekside has chosen to do communion weekly (not prescribed in the Bible on when or how often we do it) || (coming in January we will be making some changes on how we do communion so that we can all take it together [like today] instead of it being done individually)

-- POTENTIAL PROBLEM: the frequency of taking communion can have potential consequences || GROWING UP, once a quarter, Sun Pm…we did a good job of making communion pretty insignificant (it was believed it would be special if we did it fewer times in a year) || but we take communion every week, to state how important and special it is…but because of its frequency, if we are not careful, doing communion every week might cause it to become rote and lose its significance. We might stop honoring the meal or taking serious what we are participating in every week, taking communion in an unworthy way, not examining ourselves properly. || This is a special, holy, reverent thing Jesus modeled and commanded and we need to make sure we remember that.

-- Which leads us to the passage in 1 COR 11, which gives us the three things we need to do every time we take communion…

—> Background
Paul was giving instruction to the church in Corinth. They were not honoring the Lord’s Supper and in this letter he admonished them and corrected them so that they might make some changes in how they were observing communion. They would gather together to eat a meal and would also celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. But they were not doing it correctly and were actually in sin as they met together || Paul was not a disciple of Jesus while Jesus was leading his 12…but Jesus gave to Paul a special revelation with instruction, specifically about the Lord’s Supper…Let’s read the whole portion of his revelation and correction of the Church in Corinth and then I want to draw our attention to three things he instructs them to do when taking communion together.
3. WHAT SHOULD WE DO EACH TIME WE TAKE COMMUNION?...

When participating in the Lord’s Supper, we need to take at least three serious, reverent looks:

1. An INWARD look
2. A BACKWARD look
3. A FORWARD look.
A. EXAMINE YOURSELF…

1 COR 11:28 CSB
28 Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup.

-- If there ever is a time when we should do some serious, reverent heart searching, it is in preparation for taking the Communion. Paul says that we are to examine ourselves…not to discover whether we are worthy to participate but to determine if we are partaking in a worthy manner and for a worthy purpose. No one merits the privilege of sitting at the Lord’s Table. By God’s grace, we are given the privilege of becoming his children and having fellowship with him. The psalmist’s prayer is always appropriate as we seek to create a proper attitude for the observance of the Lord’s Supper:

PSALM 139:23–24 CSB
“23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.”

—> STOP AND REFLECT
Take some time to pray PS:139, confess sin, examine yourself…if you are not a disciple, repent and believe the gospel of Jesus
B. REMEMBER JESUS…

1 COR 11:24-25 CSB
24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.””

- The Lord’s Supper is a memorial supper that is to remind us of Jesus Christ’s death on the cross for our sins. As we remember, we should sit in the gloom of Gethsemane’s garden and try to enter into the agony of our Savior as he committed himself to the cross on our behalf. We should stand outside of old Jerusalem and take to heart the wonderful, terrible cross on which Jesus, the Prince of glory died. We need to let this experience inform our intellect, stir our emotions, and sway our will. We must look back to Calvary if we are to receive the elements of the Lord’s Supper into our mind, heart, attitudes, and ambitions. When we read those accounts or read passages from the OT that depicts these moments, it draws us in to the reality of Jesus’ sacrificial death, as a substitute for me and you, to pay for our sins…

—> STOP AND REFLECT
I am going to read some scripture that predicts and tells the account of Jesus’ suffering for us…listen, look back, imagine the agony and love of Jesus…for you and your sin…

ISAIAH 52:13-15 & ISAIAH 53:1-12 [CSB]
PSALM 22 [CSB] LUKE 23:44-47 & JOHN 19:28-30 [CSB]
C. PROCLAIM JESUS…

1 COR 11:26 CSB
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes"

- By our participation in the Lord’s Supper, we proclaim Christ’s death, and we are to do this until he returns. The most glorious event on the horizon is that moment when the heavens will open and then Jesus will descend with a shout, with the trumpet of God, and with the voice of the archangel. With the apostle John, we should look forward and pray, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20).

-- Every week when we take communion together we proclaim the redemptive power of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection to each other and to everyone in this place…

—> STOP AND REFLECT
I want to dismiss you to go get the bread and cup and bring it back to your seat. Don’t take communion on your own, we will take it together…so wait for my instructions…
