Colossians 1:15-20 - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For byhim all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Colossians 1:21-23—And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creationunder heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Vs 21—
Hostile in mind—Romans 1:2
Doing evil deeds—Titus 1:16

Alienated from God in 2 ways: Thoughts and Deeds.
Vs 22—
Combating Heresy--There was a blending of religions, Greek philosophy, mysticism, which eventually led to what is known as Gnosticism.

Referring to Jewish sacrificial system— All sacrifices ended because Jesus Christ fulfilled them all removing the barrier between man and God.
Vs 23—
Having been given a new life, they must behave in accordance with it.
We work from our salvation, not for it. (Eph. 2:8-9)

Embracing 3 Reasons for the “Hope of the Gospel”:
1--We can continually acknowledge the Truth that has been revealed to us. Head Change.

2--Christ has done what we cannot do. Heart Change.

3--Believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit. Life Change.

A life surrendered to His authority is characterized by Faith, Perseverance, and Hope.

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Discussion Questions:

3. In a community that is largely alienated and hostile in mind/actions, how has your connection with God given you hope this week?

4. How is your identity (what is true of believers) connected to Christian hope?

5. How is hope connected to personal holiness and “Christian living”?

6. In what areas of your life do you need to remember Jesus’ supremacy?

7. What is one way you could trust Him in this area this week?
