Matthew 6:19-24
Passage is 6:19-34 with two sections:
6:19-24 - warning on wealth
6:25-34 - warning on worry
Point is Right Priority = Love God, not your stuff

Jesus warns his disciples that being devoted to stuff and pursuing more stuff is:
-a futile endeavor because stuff is temporary
-a dangerous influence upon us because worshipped stuff owns us

Was Jesus condemning wealth or having stuff or calling us to vows of poverty?
Two kinds of treasure

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth…Store your treasures in heaven…Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Treasure = is an all-inclusive term used here to speak of what we assign our identity to.

“Property and money that are being used and put to work are not vulnerable to destruction and theft in the same way unused possessions are when simply hoarded at home. Jesus is not forbidding surplus, but unused surplus…we will use what we have to serve God as our only master.” Blomberg, Christians in an Age of Wealth.
Two kinds of eyes =

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy…light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness.

a good eye = metaphor points to a generous soul
an evil eye = metaphor points to a greedy soul
Two Masters

“No one can serve two masters…you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” Exodus 20:3

Mammon = property, wealth, status, comforts, in this here and now selfish bound life.

We usually can’t see our own greed.

“And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!”
Following Jesus means allowing Him to reshape our view of possessions:
-we have a stewardship to God
-we use of our things for Kingdom use
-we are vigilant that what we own does not own us
-we constantly give away what we do not use or don’t actually need
-we give planning to our giving as Kingdom investment
What does our Kingdom investment portfolio look like these days:
Acts 4 / 1Corinthians 9 / 1Corinthians 16 / 2Corinthians 8-9 / Galatians 6 / 1Timothy 5

Regular giving to my church
Regular giving to help people in need
Regular giving to mission endeavors
Regular generosity as a lifestyle
Figuring what we treasure:
What occupies our thoughts?
What do we dream of having and doing?
What do we worry about most?
How do we measure/evaluate others?
Who do our financial goals reflect, God or us?
