God's Love Pursues Us
Title: King David’s Complicated Life Sermon: God's Love Pursues Us 2 Samuel 11 finds our beloved King David in a bad place. He has covered up adultery and conspired to murder Uriah the Hittite. Some time has passed and perhaps David thought everything was ok. But God loves him too much to leave him at that place. So God pursues the king. Grace-Grace. Psalm 51:6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

4 Witnesses to Push Back Evil
1. Conscience
a. “Conscience is a beautiful thing!”
b. The Greek word translated “conscience” in the NT = “moral awareness” or “moral consciousness.” The conscience reacts when my actions, thoughts, and words conform to, or are contrary to, a standard of right and wrong.
i. How can humans have a conscience if we didn’t start with it? How did that evolve?
c. The New Testament illustrates the conscience as a witness to something. Paul says the Gentiles have consciences that bear witness to the presence of the law of God written on their hearts, even though they did not have the Mosaic Law (Romans 2:14-15).
2. The Holy Spirit
3. The Word of God
4. The Church
a. If the church withdraws from the marketplace, public sector of ideas, from the ballot box; how will the world find its moral compass?
b. Vote.

1. The Lord loves him too much to leave him in this state.
2. It's easier to pass judgment upon another than admit you own sin.
a. The rich-man should have had pity on the poor man, just like David should have had pity on Uriah
b. The rich man stole from the poor man just like David stole from Uriah.
3. Why is it we can get so angry at the sin of others and not see the sin in our own heart?

It’s easy to say, “I’m not doing well brother!”, or “Oh, pray for me sister”. I’m not doing so good!
It’s much harder to say, “I’m struggling with lust in my heart!”, or “I’ve gossiped against another believer!”
4. Confession is powerful when we bring specifics: Not “Oh, I’ve done some bad things”, no what? To whom? When?
David, had plenty (everything Saul had, the house of Israel and of Judah and I would have given more if that wasn’t enough) but was not satisfied.
i. 1 Timothy 6:6. But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God]. AMP

The king has despised the commandment of God, to do what is evil in his sight.
a. In his sight?
b. He’s the God who sees. El Roi. (Ro-ee). Gen 16:13
5. It’s a good thing to remember that our God sees all things.

6. David will reap what he has sown with interest.
a. David demanded a 4-fold restitution; God would require a 4-fold restitution from David’s sons. Bathsheba’s child, Amnon, Absolom, Adonijah
b. You have taken, “the wife of Uriah the Hittite” to be your wife.
c. Just as David violated another’s wife, so his wives would be violated by another. (2 Sam 16:21-22)

What David does next will define the future of his reign but more importantly his relationship with God!
The words are very few, but that is a good sign of a thoroughly broken spirit. There is no excuse, no hiding, no concealment of the sin. There is no searching for loophole, no pretext put forward, no human weakness pleaded. He acknowledged his guilt openly candidly and without any denial of truth. Keil and Delitzsch
a. Against the Lord
i. Against Bathsheba. Uriah. Joab, the other men (and their families) who died in battle next to Uriah, David’s wives, his children, against the nation.
ii. Worse, he sinned against the Lord

David fasted and wept for God to show mercy upon his son.
a. In God’s mercy he took the child into His presence
i. I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”
ii. 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
7. Prayer and fasting are not tools to get whatever we ask from God, rather, they are tools to get closer to God and gain His perspective.

God forgives repentant sinners!
Joab fought for more than a year to conquer Rabbah.
Victory came when the king confessed his sin and repented
Seemingly, there was a spiritual reason behind the prolonged war@ Rabbah
Proverbs 14:34. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.
