The Other Side of Betrayal

The Other Side of Betrayal

King David knew the sting of betrayal intimately, many times. This Sundays message we find the king on the other side. We tend to think, “I would never do that”! Until we do. If we’re not careful, we can replicate upon others the hurt that was done to us. 1 Corinthians 10: 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Imprecatory prayers from Psalms

a. In the NT, Jesus exhorts us to pray for our enemies; do good to those who hate you (Matthew 5:44–48; Luke 6:27–38), but praying for their death or for bad things to happen to them isn’t what He meant.

b. We are to pray for their salvation then for God’s will to be done.

i. Jesus said to bless those who curse us

ii. That kind of prayer allows us to get His perspective and softens our heart towards others

iii. And it reminds us that He is in control of everything
Our Adversary Satan never takes time off!
King David knew of the sting of betrayal
Why is this story in the Bible? Wouldn’t it have been better to leave it out?

a. Because it actually happened.
b. Even a man after God’s own heart is not perfect.
c. I need to know when I fail God there’s a path back to Him
20 years ago, the path was laid for this moment

a. you never know when a small seed of compromise will break ground.

b. A work of the flesh left unchecked will eventually sprout and cause devastation.
After a season of great victory--watch out, great temptation may be around the corner!
No matter how great, powerful, successful (you might even be a man or woman after God’s own heart)--you can still fall hard!

a. Goliath represents David’s greatest triumph

1. He was thrust into prominence
2. Full of strength and courage
3. Trust in his God

b. This situation with Bathsheba is just as dangerous, maybe even more so.

1. Represents his greatest defeat.
2. David could defeat the nations around him on the battlefield but would lose the battle of his own passion!

c. These 2 contrasting battlefields would sum up his entire life

What the king does now will significantly impact his relationship with God, his family, those he leads, and Israel, perhaps unlike any other.
David Saw

James 1:14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

David sent and inquired about the woman

Keys to have consistent victory over temptation:

1. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

a. To "keep or guard" means maintenance, care, and support.

2. A wise person realizes that temptation is real

1 Corinthians 10:13. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

3. Why the heart?

a. Scripture places a strong emphasis on the heart as the source of good or evil.

b. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick."

c. "The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45).

4. Remember, at the root of most sin is an unmet need, desire or void that only God can fill. And where does that come from? The heart.

a. Know the Word of God to combat any area of weakness

b. Humble yourself and have accountable relationships.

c. Did David took a few seconds to think through how terribly wrong this could go? Did he ponder, “Is this worth it?

Because if he did, he might not have done it!
