Series Title: “Beyond the Noise”

When God makes us wait upon him, we are forced to truly look at ourselves
The reflection can be terrifying and painful
The reflection can lead to growth
God is compassionate and loving through this process
The prophet Jeremiah explains the importance of depending on GOD, waiting quietly for His salvation, and sitting alone in silence with His demands in the Old Testament book of Lamentations 3:22-33. Do you depend on GOD?Do you wait quietly for Him? When was the last time you sat alone in silence with His demands as written in Scripture?
The discipline of solitude and silence with the LORD is often difficult because it requires us to stop everything and to completely quiet our whole self in the presence of GOD. Especially in our culture, we do not wait well. We are conditioned to be busy all the time with noise all around us. Quiet makes many of us nervous and afraid. Why is it important to sit and wait upon the LORD in silence?
In 1 Kings 19, GOD asks the prophet Elijah (after he had fled into the wilderness in fear for his life) what he is doing there. If GOD were to ask you the same question right now, where you are in life, what would your answer be?
Ruth Haley Barton, in her book Invitation to Solitude and Silence, says that this question is a very good one to ask yourself when you’re sitting in solitude and silence with the LORD. She also suggests asking “Who am I when I’m doing nothing? Won’t the world just pass me by while I’m sitting here doing nothing?”What are your answers to these questions?
When we sit in solitude and silence waiting upon the LORD we are forced to have to face ourselves. However, it’s not until we are forced to face ourselves (warts and all) that we are then ready to face GOD.
