Theology Prompts Doxology

Theology Prompts Doxology

In the first half of Romans, Paul laid out the foundations of the gospel (ch. 1-4) and the fruit it bears in our lives (ch. 5-8). He ended in the highest heights, delighting in the gifts we have through faith in Christ. The Holy Spirit. Adoption into God's family. Future glory to which our present sufferings pale in comparison. And the assurance that NOTHING can separate us from God's love – it's a covenant he has made with us through the death and resurrection of his Son! But wait…didn't God make promises to Israel, who were also his covenant people? And not all Israel received Jesus, so did God's covenant fail? How are we to think about this – about Israel, about God's faithfulness? As Paul addresses these questions, he seems to hold God's election (choosing) in tension with human responsibility (to choose God)…how do we make sense of that? Above all, can we really trust that God is faithful, even when we're struggling to see it? (Spoiler: we absolutely can!)

Beyond Sunday

Growing with Jesus isn’t just for Sundays. Make it an everyday, everywhere, with everyone mission by going “beyond Sunday”!

Engage in these resources on your own and with your Grow Group*, family, or a friend:

Grow
• Consider the biblical meaning of “worship” by reading this article: npberean.org/beyond6
• Keep a list of the different ways that you see God’s “inexhaustible magnitude” around you as you go throughout your week.

Share
• What is one new way you can “speak glory to God” by how you live your life this week?
• Write out Romans 11:33-36 in your own words. Consider how to share these truths with one person, then actually do it!

Connect
• In what ways are we “stealing glory that belongs to God”? Why? How can we change that?
• Listen to or sing the Doxology together (npberean.org/beyond7). Then discuss how we can use this song as a reminder of our purpose.
• Explore Romans 12:1-2 together to prepare for next week’s sermon.

* Connecting in community with other believers is crucial for spiritual growth. Explore group options at npberean.org/gg

Next Week's Sermon

What does it look like practically to live out our faith in Christ? Having explored Gospel Foundations (Romans 1-4), Gospel Fruit (5-8), and Gospel Faithfulness (9-11), Paul makes a radical shift as he draws his letter to a close. The first 11 chapters were full of indicatives (statements of truth) about us, God, and how Christ restores our broken relationship with God. But from chapter 12 onward, the letter shifts to imperatives (commands) about how to live a life that's flourishing in the goodness of this gospel truth. Join in as we consider what Gospel Flourishing looks like and how we can engage it well.
