Preeminent in Our World, Colossians 1:1-18
“Jesus of Nazareth was no plastic saint. He’s a real-world kind of Savior. It’s not important whether you have Jesus on your car’s dashboard, but it’s vital to know he’s living in your heart. He isn’t plastic, he’s powerful. He’s not small, he’s infinite. He’s not a good-luck token. He’s the risen Lord of time and eternity.”
- Dr. David Jeremiah
Isaiah 53:2, …He had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
Colossians 1:18, He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Colossians 1:3,4, We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints…
Colossians 1:10, …Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…
Colossians 1:15-18, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead…

Who is Jesus?
- The image of the invisible God
Hebrews 1:3, He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature…
- The firstborn of all creation
Psalm 89:27, And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
Psalm 90:1,2, Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- The creator of all
Colossians 1:16, For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

If this world doesn’t matter to God then…
1 – Do whatever you want.
2 – Build a bunker and wait for Jesus.
Big idea: Jesus came to transform every corner of our world with His love and purpose.
1. Don’t use grace as permission to sin.
Romans 6:1,2, What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Colossians 1:10, …So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God…
2. Don’t become so heavenly minded we are no earthly good.
Colossians 1:16, For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities…
Romans 13:1, Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
“Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship…”
“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”
- Thomas Jefferson

1. God is sovereign, so we don’t panic.
2. Let Scripture guide every part of life.
“Every Christian citizen who lives in a democracy has, at the very least, a minimal obligation to be well-informed and to vote for candidates and policies that are most consistent with biblical principles.”
- Wayne Grudem
3. Prayer is our strongest weapon.
I Timothy 2:1,2, First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
4. Our great allegiance is to our true King, Jesus Christ.
