Introduction
Two Metaphors – Shepherd and Host
Psalm 23 NASB
A Psalm of David
The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
The Shepherd who provides.
3 He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
The Shepherd who guides.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
The Shepherd who protects.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
The hospitable Host.
6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
The inescapable Host.

Read Aloud: Psalm 23

1. v.1-2 “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.” Can you relate to not having want? How does Jesus, as our Shepherd, bring contentment? Read John 6:35; how does this verse relate to God’s provision in our lives?

2. v.3 “He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Restore means to return. Have you ever felt God returning you to the right path? Why does He do it for His name’s sake?

3. v.4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Do you think the paths of righteousness can lead to dark valleys? The rod was used for protection from outside influences, and the staff for protection from inside influences. Which influences are you more affected by, the dangers around you or the thoughts within you?

4. v.5-6 “5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” How does Jesus give peace in the presence of danger or fear (enemies)? Do you think Jesus likes you or tolerates you? Are you aware of His goodness and lovingkindness following you?
