Discussion Notes (for use in a small group or individual study)
Sermon: Living Wisely Under the Sun
(Phone apps are good for comparing multiple translations. Study Bibles help with interpretation.)
Questions:
1. Opening question: What area of your life do you especially need wisdom in right now?
2. The sermon was based on Ecclesiastes 9 and 10 and focused on wisdom. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you or impacted you?
3. Read 1 Corinthians 1:17-30 and James 3:13-17
a) What did you think of the idea of there being two kinds of wisdom?
b) In what ways are these two kinds of wisdom similar?
c) In what ways are they different?
4. Read 1 Kings 3:5-9
a) If God gave you any wish, what do you think you would ask for?
b) What specifically did Solomon request?
c) Now read 1 Kings 3:10-15. What was God’s response to Solomon’s request? What does this teach you about God and his desire for our lives?
d) Now read 1 Kings 10:1-9. In what ways was Solomon’s gift of wisdom used for good?
5. Read 1 Kings 11:1-12
a) How could Solomon turn away from the Lord like this when he had been so gifted with wisdom?
b) What can we learn from Solomon’s spiritual ruin? (see 1 Corinthians 10:12 and Matthew 26:41)
c) If earthly wisdom can’t keep us close to the Lord, what can? (see Hebrews 7:25, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, and John 10:28-29)
6. Read Proverbs 16:16. How desperate are you to grow in wisdom? Do you really believe it is more valuable than gold?
7. What can you do to acquire more wisdom? (see Proverbs 8:5, Proverbs 3:7, Psalm 119:98-99, Proverbs 13:20, and James 1:2-5)
8. Spend some time asking God for more of His wisdom. Ask Him to guide you in specific areas where you lack direction. And pray for any needs in your group.
