King David: A Complicated Life; His Kindness

Mark Twain said, “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”. Today we’ll discuss, through the life of King David, the supernatural power to overcome the rude, insensitive, and unkind feelings that well up inside you like a Vegas flash flood! 2 Samuel 9:1 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?”

Kindness, Loving-Kindness

1. According to the Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary

a. “the divine kindness out of which God acts toward humankind.
i. It is what the [Old Testament] means when it declares that ‘God is good,’

b. “Christians should show kindness by behaving toward others as God has behaved toward them.”

c. Mercy--grace
d. Strength
e. Love

Covenant:

a. Mutual rights and obligations between 2 parties in a close relationship
b. Cesed
Kindness is humbly giving ourselves in love and mercy to others who:

i. may not be able to give anything back
ii. don’t deserve it
iii. don’t thank us for it.
1. David invites Mephibosheth into his family
2. He restores all the family land of Saul back to Mephibosheth
3. He provides servants to work his land and provide for him
4. He invites him to his table
1. David remembered his covenant with Jonathan

a. “remembered” is a covenant word
b. It means, to bring the blessing of the covenant into fruition

1. Gen 19:29. So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

c. God remembers His covenant with Jesus


2. David sought out Mephibosheth

a. Jesus seeks us out!
1. Who might you need to seek out?
3. David restored all Mephibosheth lost

a. God restores all we have lost thru Jesus
b. Mephibosheth secured the blessing of his children through his covenant with David.
1. We secure the blessing of God through death and resurrection of Jesus
4. David blessed Mephibosheth because of his relationship with Jonathan

a. God blesses us because of our relationship with Jesus

1. Who might you need to bless because of your relationship with Jesus?
Mephibosheth had nothing to offer the King, you and I have nothing to offer the King!

Mephibosheth didn’t deserve all he got, you and I do not deserve the loving kindness of the King!

That’s how the cross works!

If I’m going to live a life of kindness, I must be intentional.
