Be Honest

Be Honest

We’re really uncomfortable with the idea that an all-powerful, all-loving God could stop suffering but doesn’t. But could he have a reason for allowing suffering that we don’t know about or don’t acknowledge as valuable? Join in as we explore what we can learn from the story of one famous sufferer in the Bible about how to face life (and God) When Trouble Comes.

Beyond Sunday

Growing with Jesus isn’t just for Sundays. Make it an everyday, everywhere, with everyone mission by going “beyond Sunday”!

Engage in these resources on your own and with your Grow Group*, family, or a friend:

Grow
• Consider this article to better understand the often-misunderstood concept of “lament”: npberean.org/beyond1
• “In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” (v.22) For helpful insight on the biblical word for “sin,” watch this video: npberean.org/beyond2

Share
• Do you know someone who is suffering? How could it help them to “be honest” with God and themselves? How will you encourage them toward honesty?
• Listen to “It is Well” (npberean.org/beyond3) Honestly share with God whether or not you actually believe this truth for yourself.

Connect
• Is our natural response to our own or other’s suffering to honestly confront God? Why or why not?
• Job was honest in his suffering through lament, worship, and acceptance. How does this example both encourage and challenge us?
• Explore Job 40:1-9, 42:1-6 together to prepare for next week’s sermon.

* Connecting in community with other believers is crucial for spiritual growth. Explore group options at npberean.org/gg

Next Week's Sermon

When trouble comes, it's easy to judge God as being deficient in some way – in power, love, goodness, justice, wisdom… But this assumes we know how things should be and he doesn't, or that he does know but won't/can't make it happen. Could it be, though, that the limitation is not in God, but in us?
