Jesus Renews Us to Live Out Our Kingdom Roles as Salt and Light
Our Kingdom Influence as Salt in daily life

13 “You are the salt of the earth.”

Salt had two primary uses in ancient times: to preserve meat and to flavor food

The point: we get to make the world a better place by their Christlike presence in it.

How?
Our Kingdom Impact as Light in Darkness
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

1Peter 2 “Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”

Light helps people find their way in the dark, so they are not lost or stumbling down a wrong path.

The point: we get to be the lights to help others in the dark find their way to God.

How?
The Danger of Diminishment
“But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless…15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket.

An absurd twist for emphasis: you can’t re-salt salt, you don’t hide light

To lose saltiness = to live no different than the world is to have nothing to offer the world

Being salt and light is godly influence as a daily gig, a life-long impact for Christ in ways we can see and won’t.
