Facing our Giants - Carlo Casaleggio
1 Samuel 17 tells us the story of a young David facing, and ultimately defeating, the giant Goliath. This well-known tale is one of excitement and triumph, but it is also a picture of the world today. There are the giants of sin and evil popping up all over, and we, as children of God, are automatically conscripted into the army of God and employed into battle. But all too often, the challenge of proclaiming and spreading the gospel, of pushing back the forces of evil, of destroying the giants in our world, is not being accomplished. That is the tremendous challenge facing us today. This story is one that encourages us to stop hesitating, be willing to serve, and act with boldness and enthusiasm for the work God has called us to do.

Like Goliath, giants of sin and evil are everywhere. As children of God, we are part of His army, called to fight these battles. However, too often, we are complacent, staying in our comfort zones instead of stepping up to proclaim the gospel and push back the forces of evil.
David’s brothers, like many of us today, were caught in endless discussions about the right time and strategy to act rather than actually stepping out in faith. We must not let planning and meetings become excuses for inaction. God is calling us to move beyond talk and take bold steps for His kingdom.
King Saul prayed for someone else to fight Goliath despite knowing he was the chosen leader. We often do the same, asking God to send others to do the difficult work while we offer support from a distance. We must confront our own reluctance and be willing to step forward ourselves.
We may feel unqualified or ill-equipped to serve, thinking we need certain skills or personalities to work for God. But like David, all God wants is our willingness to be available. The only weapon we need is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and God will use us just as we are.
David’s enthusiasm and boldness to face Goliath head-on should inspire us. We need a Holy Spirit-filled passion for sharing the gospel in our churches today. God doesn’t need the clever or the rich; He needs those who recognise their time is short and are ready to dedicate their lives and talents to advancing His kingdom.
Facing our giants with faith and action!
