King David: A Complicated Life, His Patience

King David: A Complicated Life, His Patience

Volumes have been written about King David. Only Jesus is mentioned more in the Bible. Chosen by God to be King and he’s the only one called, “A man after God’s own heart”. What was it about him that was so special? What can we learn? Well, it’s complicated. Today we'll study the attribute of Patience.

Patience is a rare discipline!
Is it really that important?

1. God is patient

2 Peter 3: 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

2. He gives His people the strength to be patient

Colossians 1:119 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;

It’s an inward discipline that takes supernatural power

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient and kind
"Patience, endurance, perseverance." Its meaning expresses a remaining under or endurance in circumstances. (to hyperstand, dig in, put yr feet down so that nothing can knock you over)

i. Hebrews 12:1-2, where we find the Christian life described as the running of a race

ii. 2nd word is made up of the adjective makro/v, which means "long," and qumo/v, which means "passion, heat, anger."

MAKROTHUMIA is used to express a slow reaction toward another human being or of God waiting to bring judgment against man.
God has a timing. A pace.

a. Get ahead of Him and you will regret it
b. Lag behind Him and you might miss it

i. His pace is not our pace!
ii. David must wait until selfish King Saul releases the throne.
David leaves his promotion in the Hands of God

1. God’s pace is different than ours.

2. He has a plan

3. David has no idea when he will become king, but he trusts in God to make it happen.

4. 21 Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father's house.” 22 And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

5. Where does he go?
1. Be patient like a farmer.
2. Patient people seldom grumble
Why am I so impatient?

a. Selfishness
i. I want it my way, and I want it now.
ii. I should not be interrupted
iii. I should not have to wait on you

b. I’m lacking faith
i. I don’t really believe that God has my best interest in mind
ii. If I don’t do something, the opportunity will be lost
iii. It’s been this long, surely, I need to help God on this one
To “be still”, here, means to stop frantic activity, to let down, and to be still.

For God’s people being “still” would involve looking to the Lord for their help (cf. Exodus 14:13); for God’s enemies, being “still” would mean ceasing to fight a battle they cannot win.
