Weak vs. Strong
- The most widely accepted view is that the weak were mainly Jewish believers and perhaps some Gentile believers who had come under Jewish influence and were unable to let go of certain crucial aspects of O.T. ceremonial law especially rules about diet and special days.
- The weak are those who tend to include matters of opinion as if they are matters of law. The strong have a better understanding of how to distinguish matters of opinion from matters of law.
- In his book, Reading Romans Backwards, Scot McKnight acknowledges that the weak and strong have to do with matters of faith and conscience. That means it's not just divided over ethnic lines and Torah observances, but that the weak are predominantly the Jewish believers and the strong are predominantly Gentile believers.
