Our motivation is to please God. But the "great cloud of witnesses" in Hebrews 12:1 are motivating to us as well! Running a good race will help us be ready to endure what is ahead of us--trials.
1) Look to Jesus. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith!
2) Lay aside every weight. We need to lay aside sins “which cling so closely”. “Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (vs.13-14)
If you are wanting to run a stronger race with longer endurance…
1) Confess the entangling sin in your life to God in order that you might receive the much needed forgiveness of that sin.
2) Consistently ask God for the power and strength necessary to make no provision for that sin in any area of your life.
3) Confess your entangling sin to another brother and sister in Christ in order that you might have a running partner in your life who will help you to make no provision for that sin in your life.
