Romans 1-5 Dealt with:

- The Reign of Sin & Death (Man’s Ruin)

- The Reign of Grace (Man’s Rescue)

Romans 5:20(ESV) “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more”…
What about Sin and the Believer?

Justification: (1) the act by which God moves a willing person from the state of sin (injustice) to the state of grace (justice), (2) the change in a person's condition moving from a state of sin to a state of righteousness.

‌Three deviations from the biblical teaching on justification:

1. Moralism: the approach to Christianity that focuses on the teachings of Scripture as moral guides to be embraced by society without adequate emphasis on the need for repentance and faith that leads to justification.‌

2. Legalism: To guard one’s salvation disciplines, rules, and regulations are embraced to isolate the believer from the world and all influences that would hinder one’s spiritual progress.

3. Cheap Grace: “The Believer has been forgiven and will go on being forgiven whatever they do, so they can do whatever they wish.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer
A Believer’s Relationship to Sin

Romans 6:1(ESV)
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

Romans 6:1-2(ESV)
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
A Believer’s Relationship to Christ

Romans 6:3-7(ESV)
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
The “cheap grace” people give little thought to sin.
The “moralists” feel that sin is a human problem with human solutions
The “legalists” try to conquer sin through legislation,
Paul teaches that sin is to be handled through a relationship to Christ.
A Believer’s Relationship to Christ

1. Our old self was crucified with Christ.

2. Our old self was crucified with Christ so that our body of sin might be brought to nothing.

3. Our old self was crucified with Christ so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
As a Believer our focus should go beyond dying to sin, to being alive in Christ.

Romans 6:8-11(ESV)
8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

- It’s not about what you are saying no to (N-O)
- It’s about who you are growing to Know (K-N-O-W)
- What keeps you away from sin is not more rules or no rules, but more relationship.

The motivation to live holy isn’t fear of what God is going to do to you, it’s love because of what He has done for you.
