Notes:
What is saving faith?
1. A saved person does not work. This cannot mean a person disregards the law (Rom 3:31 - We uphold it). Saving faith means a person no longer trusts in obedience as a way to be saved. A Christian is one who stops working to to be saved, not a one who stops working.
2. A saved person trusts God, who justifies the ungodly v5. This means a Christian is one who trusts that God has a way to save APART FROM our efforts.
Saving faith is a trust transfer. It is the removing of one’s hopes and trust from other things to place them on God as savior.

Suppose you were to die tonight and stand before God and he says, “Why should I let you into heaven?”
A. Because I have tried my best. (works)
B. Because I believe in God and try to do his will. (Faith +works)
C. Because I believe in God with all my heart. (Faith as work)

The most subtle of these is - faith as a work. How can you know? If faith equals obedience, you are placing faith in yourself and your abilities. This will lead to boasting and pride - or despair and self hatred if you fail. BUT if faith equals trust in God’s promise to save, then you are placing your faith in God and his ability. This leads to humility and confidence - which is what Abraham discovered.
