Numbers 20-21: Knowing God and Ourselves
This chapter is the third and last travel narrative in Exodus-Numbers:
Red Sea to Sinai (Ex13-19): triumph to tragedy
Sinai to Kadesh (Num 11-12): triumph to tragedy
Kadesh to Transjordan (Num 20-21): tragedy to triumph
What we learn about God and about us.

Miriam = We can be involved in God’s story even when we don’t always know how.
Meribah = At times we can be repeating our unfaithfulness and ingratitude to God
“This place was known as the waters of Meribah (which means “quarrelling”)…”

We think God owes us more than we have
We think we know better than God, we would do it differently to get our way
We dismiss all the good God provides for our lives
We doubt the reality of His saving grace at work in our lives for His purposes
Aaron = God wants to honor our faithfulness not humiliate our failures
“Now take Aaron and his son Eleazar up Mount Hor. There you will remove Aaron’s priestly garments and put them on Eleazar, his son. Aaron will die there and join his ancestors.”

Exodus 32: the people asked Aaron to make them an idol to worship, and he complied
Numbers 12: Miriam co-opts Aaron to speak against Moses and his wife, and he complied
Numbers 20: God says Moses and Aaron are to speak, but only Moses speaks, and Aaron complied

The OT purposely shows no person, prophet, priest or king was ever sinless, ever perfect, ever righteous and so all of us need the Promised Son who is the perfect prophet, priest and king, the righteous One who can make us right.
For those who know and follow Jesus, God holds us accountable, but He doesn’t count our wrongs, He instead keeps score of our good.
Moses and the Rock that gives water points toward Christ
Exodus 17: “Strike the rock, and water will come out for the people to drink.”
Numbers 20: “speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water.”

Moses did his own thing:
-Judged the congregation in anger
-Declared he and Aaron would provide the water
-Raised his hand = Hebrew =
-Struck the rock twice in anger while Aaron remained silent

Why this was so upsetting to God:
Moses failure to obey the clear words of God was an action of unbelief and disobedience.
Moses spoke as though the miracle was his own doing, took the credit for the work of God.
