Psalm 96:1-13
King of the Earth
Sing a new song to the Lord; let the whole earth sing to the Lord.
Sing to the Lord, bless his name; proclaim his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his wondrous works among all peoples.
For the Lord is great and is highly praised; He is feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; bring an offering and enter his courts.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him.
Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns. The world is firmly established; it cannot be shaken. He judges the peoples fairly.”
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all that fills it resound. Let the fields and everything in them celebrate. Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy before the Lord, for he is coming— for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with his faithfulness.
David and Asaph when bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem in 1 Chronicles 16. Was written to tell people…
“This is what we do when we get together in the Lord: we sing.”
But, why do we sing?
1. Because God commands us to. (vv. 1-3)
- Psalm 96:1-3
Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
2. Because God is great. (v. 4)
-Psalm 96:4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.
3. Because He is real. (v. 5a)
4. Because He made the heavens. (v. 5b)
5. Because He is beautiful. (v. 6a)
- Psalm 96:6a “His splendor and majesty are before him.”
6. Because He is here. (v. 6b)
7. Because singing is a means of worship. (vv. 7-9)
8. Because He reigns. (v. 10a)
9. Because He judges fairly. (v. 10b)
10. Because all creation was made to sing. (vv. 11-12)
- Psalm 96:11-12 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all that fills it resound. Let the fields and everything in them celebrate. Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy…
11. Because He’s coming again. (v. 13a)
-Psalm 96:13 He will judge the world with righteousness.
And the peoples with his faithfulness.
12. Because He will judge the world. (v. 13b)
God will judge “with faithfulness.”
He’ll judge based on our faith in His Son.
