Nehemiah - Gates session 2

1. The Broad Wall Test (test of self-righteousness)
Characteristics and Symptoms of Self-Righteousness

1. Isolation in Faith Journey- Self-righteousness isolates believers, making them see their walk with God as a solitary quest rather than a communal pilgrimage. True Christian character involves communal faith and accountability as emphasized in Hebrews 10:24.

2. Difficulty in Collaboration - Self-righteous individuals often struggle to work harmoniously with others, due to a sense of moral superiority. The true believer values teamwork and fellowship (Ecclesiastes 4:9).

3. Infallibility Complex - A key trait is the belief in one's constant correctness. Contrarily, true humility and openness to correction are marks of genuine faith (Philippians 2:3).

4. Resistance to Change - Self-righteous people often resist spiritual renewal. However, true transformation is embraced by believers as shown in Romans 12:2.

5. Defensiveness Against Correction - Being reminded of the need for change often meets resistance in the self-righteous. A genuine follower of Christ graciously accepts rebuke and correction (Proverbs 15:31).

6. Rejection of Exhortation - Avoiding godly advice and getting irate at admonishments are signs of self-righteousness. In contrast, a true believer welcomes such guidance as it aids spiritual growth (Proverbs 19:20).

7. Lack of Patience with Sinners - There is often an impatience or harsh judgement towards those struggling with sin. However, a true Christian character is compassionate and patient (Ephesians 4:2).

8. Poor Handling of Opposition - Challenges or accusations can destabilize self-righteous individuals. However, maintaining integrity and loving enemies is what Christ teaches (Matthew 5:44).

9. Self-victimization - The questioning of why difficulties seem targeted towards them is common. True believers, however, trust in God's sovereign plans (James 1:2).

10. Denial of Sin - An unwillingness to acknowledge one's sins is a hallmark. Confession and repentance are essential aspects of a believer's life (1 John 1:9).

11. Judgmental Attitude - Often highlighting others' faults with a sense of superiority indicates a self-righteous mindset. Conversely, true Christian conduct involves gentle restoration with self-awareness (Galatians 6:1).
