Remember the Poor - Phil Kendon

Remember the Poor - Phil Kendon

“Remember the poor” is a tiny phrase that comes from the book of Galatians in the New Testament. Paul is sharing a little of his ministry journey - his conversations with the other apostles in Jerusalem about his ministry among the Gentiles - which they fully endorsed. But besides their theological conversations, there was this one vital component of ministry that they all agreed should be present. Remember the poor. This message explores how God feels about the poor and how we can adjust our lives to line up with God’s heart.

Sunday 9:30 AM

1. God protects the poor

- Even if you get away with oppressing the poor here on earth, there is another court where we must give an account.

Proverbs 22:22–23 (NIV)
Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the LORD will take up their case and will exact life for life.
2. God provides for the poor

- There are examples all through the bible of providing for the poor through his people.

Isaiah 41:17 (NIV)
The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
3. God is biased towards the poor

- Generally speaking, the poor are more open to God than the rich because they are not so self-sufficient.

James 2:5 (NIV)
Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
4. God has compassion for the poor

- Jesus often acts out of compassion in his earthly ministry.

Matthew 15:32 (NIV)
Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
5. We can grow in compassion by being present in suffering

- When we put ourselves in contact with the poor, we will find compassion rising in our hearts.

Luke 7:12–15 (NIV)
As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
