Believing When Confused
Locations & Times
First United Methodist Church of Lexington - Downtown
200 W High St, Lexington, KY 40507, USA
Sunday 8:30 AM
Sunday 11:00 AM
Jesus made seven "I am" statements in John's Gospel that indicate his divine identity and purpose:
“I am the bread of life.” (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51)
“I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)
“I am the door of the sheep.” (John 10:7,9)
“I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:25)
“I am the good shepherd.” (John 10:11, 14)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)
“I am the true vine.” (John 15:1, 5)
And it was confusing.
It is John Wesley who reminds us that, “The great work of faith is to embrace those things we do not understand.”
Belief transcends understanding. Belief facilitates understanding. Belief puts understanding in its proper place of being secondary.
We do not understand because we focus on what we can know instead of who we can follow.
It is not understanding that creates the image of Christ in us. It is obedience.
Therefore, every time we are confused and lack understanding, rather than seeing this as a challenge to our relationship with God, we can view it as an opportunity to depend on him more fully.
