1 Timothy - Doctrine Matters
Week 6 - Reasoning Out The Gospel
When it comes to correct doctrine and Biblical reasoning, it is important to understand that we (humankind) brought sin into the world and through the Gospel, God—who made the world in the first place—is remaking it through Jesus. We are never called to abandon our humanity, but rather to celebrate its rescue, redemption, and remaking. Today we can easily forget humanity has brought a fallenness to the world.

The modern Church sometimes emphasizes how good the world is so much that it fails to see that there is just as much danger in abusing the created order as there is in regarding it as evil. We must think and reason clearly if we ever hope to live a “grown-up” Christian life. Paul uses very strong language in 1 Timothy to remind us to guard, celebrate, and pray for the Gospel to go forward.
We want to engage with those who see things differently than we do so we can live as disciples of Jesus with one another.
1 Tim 4:9-10 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. In context of Paul’s words, he is speaking about our present life and the life to come—the Gospel brings a difference now and in the future.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
• What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
• What has been most helpful to your growth as a disciple of Jesus?
• How can we help one another reason out the Gospel?
• How have you seen yourself grow spiritually over time? How about your community?
• What kinds of “unnecessary rules” have you applied to your own faith?
• How does the Gospel challenge those rules?
• How can we identify/challenge where others have not fully applied the Gospel, in love and gentleness?
