What must we do? A question asked by the people who followed Jesus across the Sea of Galilee after being fed along with the 5,000 on a hillside by Jesus.
Jesus received them with enthusiasm as they were great examples of people who ask, seek and knock! He gave them a Promise, a Warning, and the Answer.
Promise - I am the Bread of Life. You can stop looking.
Warning - Don't waste your time on that which will spoil.
Answer - Believe that I am the Bread of Life. I will satisfy all of your needs. Will you trust me?
Believing takes time, energy, resources, and, yes, risk. All of these efforts are important to growing our faith. Effort in the right direction is most important. I am willing to give my life so that we will not reach the end of our days, having exhausted our life’s resources, only to find that we have arrived at a place that is filled with temporary things. And just like that gallon of milk 5 days past the expiration date, and growing stuff inside it, we realize that it won’t help us going forward.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life that came down from heaven.” Desiring me is your work, and in so doing, trust in me and I will make sure all your days are filled with the good that never ends.
