The Diagnostic Manual of Psychiatry (DSM) defines fear as “the emotional response to real or perceived imminent threat, whereas anxiety is anticipation of future threat."

Between 2004 and 2020 the percentage of teens who had at least one depressive episode rose 145% in girls and 161% in boys.

Between 2008 and 2020 the percentage of college students with diagnosed anxiety rose 134%. Those diagnosed with depression rose 106%. Anorexia experienced a 100% increase.

Between 2008 and 2020 anxiety rose in the following age brackets:
Ages 50+ by 8%
Ages 35-49 by 52%
Ages 26-34 by 103%
Ages 18-25 by 139%
