God’s commitment to us precedes His commandments for us.
The first four commandments relate to our (vertical) relationship with God.
The second six commandments relate to our (horizontal) relationship with others.
The second six commandments relate to our (horizontal) relationship with others.
1st Commandment:
“Do not have other gods besides me.” Exodus 20:3
“Do not have other gods besides me.” Exodus 20:3
2nd Commandment:
“Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. 5 Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 6 but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.” Exodus 20:4-6

4th Commandment:
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: 9 You are to labor six days and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates. 11 For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.” Exodus 20:8-11

1. As a compass to direct us
2. As a mirror to reveal the truth about us

Dig Deeper:
1. What comes to mind when you hear of the Ten Commandments? How do they make you feel?
2. What is a commandment?
3. Why do you think that most people know about the Ten Commandments, regardless of whether or not they are a Christian?
4. Read Exodus 20:1-2. Why do you believe God begins the Ten Commandments with this statement?
5. Why do you think the commandments are structured the way they are, with the first four relating to our relationship with God and the remaining six related to our relationship with others?
6. Read Exodus 20:3. Israel is less than three months from when the plagues began. Why would God already remind His people that He is the one true God?
7. What might we worship today that takes the place of the one true God?
8. Read Exodus 20:4-6. How is this different from the first commandment? Why might we desire to create a visual reference of Him in order to worship?
9. What does it mean that God is a jealous God? How is that different from people being jealous?
10. Read Exodus 20:7. What does it mean to take someone’s name in vain? What are some examples where we might misrepresent God’s character?
11. Read Exodus 20:8-11. How is this commandment linked to Genesis? How does Sabbath rest help us find rest in God?
12. If we were able to obey the first four commandments, how successful might we be at obeying the rest?
13. Read Exodus 20:12. Why do you think this is the only commandment with a promise? Define the word honor.
14. Read Exodus 20:13. Does not committing actual murder equate to us upholding this command? Why or why not?
15. Read Exodus 20:14. Who is impacted when this commandment is not upheld? Why does God care so much about marriages?
16. Read Exodus 20:15. What can stealing look like that is not as obvious as theft?
17. Read Exodus 20:16. Discuss what this commandment means. What is another word that could be used? Who is our neighbor?
18. Read Exodus 20:17. Define covet. Is this different than desire? Why does God include examples in this command?
19. How do the Ten Commandments encourage you? How do they challenge you?
20. What attributes of God’s character do the Ten Commandments reveal to you?
Live It Out:
Jesus is the only One that perfectly lived the Ten Commandments – and He fulfilled them! God’s laws are not given to earn a relationship; they are given to lead us to Jesus so that we can enjoy a relationship with Him. This week, reflect on how to use the Ten Commandments:
1. As a compass to direct us. Without a compass to guide us, we become lost. God’s law directs us and protects. Write out the ten commandments this week. With each one, include specifically how it is not a suggestion, but a commandment…and why it is a commandment. Find scripture that reiterates each commandment.
2. As a mirror to reveal the truth about us. The Ten Commandments are a moral mirror to show us our true state before God. Spend time with God this week, sharing how the “mirror” reveals who you are and what needs to be refreshed or changed. Repent to God anything that is on your heart.
3. As a road sign that points to Jesus. The motivation of the law of God is the love of God. Only through the righteousness of Jesus Christ can we be forgiven of our sins. Live each day knowing that, because of Jesus, you can live a life of outpouring love for God. Praise God this week each day when you aren’t “measuring up,” reminding yourself how He is sufficient in all ways.
