Our faith can wander when we wonder if God is really good.
Spiritual amnesia is a dangerous disease that threatens your faith.
Grumbling is not ultimately the heart’s response to circumstances, but to God.
God miraculously sustains his people to teach them He can and will provide everything they need.
Remembering God’s faithfulness frees us from grumbling to live in gratitude.

Dig Deeper:
1. Describe a time when it took you a long time to travel somewhere. What “roadblocks” did you encounter along the way? How did you feel during the journey?
2. Read Exodus 15:1-21. Before this, how recently did the Israelites see God working on their behalf? Do they seem surprised by God’s protection now? Why or why not?
3. Read Exodus 15:22-27. What two stops do the Israelites make in this passage?
4. How long are they in the wilderness before arriving in Marah? What plague might the people remember when they are at Marah?
5. Have you ever been impatient for the Lord’s provision? Who did you grumble to? What was the outcome?
6. Why is it important to know and remember that God is always good? How can we remember this truth?
7. Read Exodus 16:1-3. What is spiritual amnesia? What are they forgetting about Egypt? What are they remembering? How are their current circumstances affecting their thought process?
8. Read Exodus 16:4-15. What catches your attention as you read through verses 4–16?
9. Is it right or wrong for Christians to complain? Explain.
10. Why is it significant that “the glory of the Lord appeared” (vv. 7, 10) in that moment?
11. Describe a time when God has provided for you in a major way.
12. Why is it that, even as Christians, we can drift so easily into disobedience and distrust?
13. Read Exodus 16:16-30. How do these verses reflect basic elements of human nature? Describe how these same actions are on display in our current culture?
14. Read Exodus 16:31-34. What is the purpose of God’s commands described here?
15. On a scale of 1 (hard) to 10 (easy), how difficult is it for you to trust God as your Provider?
16. What are some things that keep you from fully trusting God as your Provider?
17. How can this chapter encourage us when we face challenges that seem insurmountable?

Live It Out:

Remembering God’s faithfulness frees us from grumbling to live in gratitude. The antidote for spiritual amnesia is making every effort to recall and remember God’s faithfulness. Take time this week to look back at God’s fingerprints all over your life. Consider all the ways He has provided for you and kept His promises to you. Use this remembrance as your “container of manna,” and keep it close during those times when you may lose sight of all that God has done for you and in you.
