John 2:1-11
1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
---
Who is there?
Nathanael from John 1.
“Will see greater things.”
Only servants and disciples (and presumably Jesus’ mother) know about the miracle.
- Mary has faith
- Servants demonstrate obedience
- Faith and obedience sees amazing things
- There is a special blessing for those who serve.
- Want to see? Follow, serve, take a step.
“Nothing good from Nazareth eh?”
---
“Woman, why do you involve me?”
"Not rude, but it is abrupt." - D.A. Carson
Jesus is free from every agenda that is not his Father’s. Mary has to learn a lesson that may have been hardest for her to learn – that no one comes to Jesus on the inside track with special treatment. - D.A. Carson (paraphrase)
---
Notice in the clip from the Chosen
1. Lots of space between the lines. For example the stress of filling the jars and the guests realizing what’s happened.
2. Jesus's response to his mother at the beginning is softer than it reads in the text.
3. Master of Banquet makes a public statement and not a private one like in the scripture.
---
3rd day – reference to Exodus 19, giving of the gift of the law
---
“My hour has not yet come.”
- Not yet time for the full revealing
- What does it make you think? “I guess there will come a time that will be his hour.”
---
Signs that reveal his Glory (vs 11)
7 signs in John (some say Jesus' resurrection is the 8th, symbolic of new creation. I'll preach on this some Easter :)
- Water to wine
- Healing the nobleman’s son
- Healing the lame man
- Feeding the multitude
- Walking on water
- Healing the man born blind
- Lazarus
There is this progression – like a light or a sound or a feeling that keeps growing brighter, louder, stronger
After the 7th sign (perfection/completion) revealing his glory...we get…
John 12:23-28 – the hour has come…to be glorified…death and resurrection…
Jesus' big revelation/glorification…will be his death, where he will bear it all for us. He'll show the heart of God for humanity, a love that would give his life, even death on a horrific, painful, cross.
---
What will that death and resurrection do for us?
Bring us a new covenant (promise, contact, deal, agreement)
New Covenant vs. Old Covenant
- Presence with us instead of mediated by a priest. Presence with us not located in the Temple
- Power to transform us and to obey from the Spirit of God. The old covenant could only expose and convict. It lacked the power to transform.
- Peace with God. The old covenant required continual sacrifices that could never take away sin. In the new covenant Jesus has been the once and for all sacrifice that brings us forgiveness.
---
Back to our story…
6 stone jars used for ceremonial washing -> a reminder of the law
Jesus replaces them with new wine. New wine = new covenant
----
This story is wonderful storytelling. A thematic glimpse.
Beautiful foreshadowing of the rest of John’s gospel.
What is God doing? He’s telling a story that just keeps getting better.
God has saved the best till now.

Matthew 26:26-29
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
