BE DIFFERENT
John 15.1-17

Matthew 16.26 (ESV) For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

Matthew 16.26 (MSG) What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?

John 15.1-11 (ESV) I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. . . Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

1 Peter 1.14-15 (ESV) Do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct. . .

Called to be. . .different. . .holy.

1 Peter 1.18 (CEV) You were rescued from the useless way of life you learned from your ancestors. But you know you were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don't last forever.

Called to aim at the right target. . .not the futile, temporal, expiration date, targets.

We are. . .

1 Peter 2.9 (ESV) A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

The old King James Version has the phrase “peculiar people” here. Again. . .different.

1 Peter 1.17 (CEV) . . . You must honor God while you live as strangers here on earth.

We get that, as disciples, however well we do here in terms of the culture’s metrics of success, we are just passing through. We’re headed for our forever home. So, we live as “strangers here on earth.”

1 Peter 2.11 (ESV) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

We live as sojourners. . .exiles. . .we act like people who know that there are pursuits and passions around us that are toxic. . .that wage war against our souls.
