Summer Psalm - What Path You Choosing? - Week 1

Psalm 1 - Listen to the wisdom of God and not the wisdom
of the world.

We prefer to do things our own way.
We prefer not to look at the warning signs.

It’s unwise for us to think that we’ll never suffer any negative consequences for our actions.

The Psalms… “Wisdom Literature”
The Book of Psalms was written around the first century and is a collection of 150 poems written by King David, Solomon, and a few others.

“psalm” means “song - ”Hebrew = praises.”

Psalm 1 :1-2 (ESV)Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night.

Joy comes from following God’s commands daily.

Psalm 1:3-4 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

1) Like a tree that gets the proper nourishment that it needs.
- It therefore grows fruit and never withers.

2. “the wicked as being …” (Vs 4)
- like chaff that the wind drives away.

Being rooted in God - stable and bear fruit that helps others
vs.
not being rooted in God - unstable and unfruitful.

And to be unfruitful means that your life is not of benefit to anyone, not even yourself.

God wants you to be fruitful.

Psalm 1:5-6Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows that way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

God knows your heart, and choosing not to live for Him will end in consequences.

That good life is found in God, not the world.

Listen to the wisdom of God and not the wisdom of the world.

So how are you living right now?

For the Week ahead…
1. What do you think it means to stay rooted in God?

2. What do you think it means to get tossed around like
“chaff in the wind?” (v.4)

3. Can this psalm and its truth apply today?
How? In what way?
