The 10 plagues are acts of justice meant to compel Pharaoh to humble himself and let Israel go free.
1. Nile river becomes blood (Exodus 7:14-25)
This is what the Lord says: Here is how you will know that I am the Lord. Watch. I am about to strike the water in the Nile with the staff in my hand, and it will turn to blood. Exodus 7:17
2. Frogs (Exodus 8:1-15)
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Appeal to the Lord to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go and they can sacrifice to the Lord.” Exodus 8:8
3. Gnats (Exodus 8:16-19)
…But Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said. Exodus 8:19
4. Flies (Exodus 8:20-32)
But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not let the people go. Exodus 8:32
5. Death of Livestock (Exodus 9:1-7)
6. Boils (Exodus 9:8-12)
7. Hail (Exodus 9:13-35)
8. Locusts (Exodus 10:1-20)

The Passover: God’s deliverance of His people through a substitute that was sacrificed.
The Lamb was Perfect
You must have an unblemished animal, a year-old male; you may take it from either the sheep or the goats. Exodus 12:5
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb. 1 Peter 1:18-19

The Lamb was Shared
If the household is too small for a whole animal, that person and the neighbor nearest his house are to select one based on the combined number of people; you should apportion the animal according to what each will eat. Exodus 12:4

The Lamb was Sacrificed
You are to keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembly of the community of Israel will slaughter the animals at twilight. They must take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where they eat them. Exodus 12:6-7
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:7

Jesus is the Fulfillment of the Passover

Dig Deeper:
1. Have you ever asked God to give you a physical sign? What should we trust the promises of God more than physical signs of His presence?
2. Discuss the different plagues. How many plagues are there? Of the nine plague descriptions, how many include a statement about Pharaoh’s heart?
3. Do you see any significance to the order of the plagues? Why do you think God order them as He does?
4. How can something harmless, such as frogs or flies, become a horrifying plague? How have such things been portrayed in movies?
5. Why do you think the account of the plagues is written in such a repetitive, structured manner? How would this approach have helped Moses’s original audience? How does it help us today?
6. As the plagues progressed, how did Pharaoh’s compromises change? During the eighth and ninth plagues, Pharaoh’s verbal response takes an interesting turn. See Exodus at 9:27 and 10:16. Discuss his verbal answers in light of his continued refusal to let the Israelites go.
7. Have you ever made promises to God when you were in a crisis and then set them aside once the crisis had passed? Why do we tend to do this? What does this kind of behavior indicate we believe is true about God? About us?
8. Note the details of the of the Passover feast – when it was, what was to be eaten, how it was prepared, how to dress, where to place the blood of the lamb, and the purpose of the observance.
9. Look at Exodus 12:29-32. Why did this plague lead to the successful release of the Israelites? How is it ironic? Look back at Exodus 1:22 to help with your answer.
10. Why do Christians not observe the feast of the Passover today? How does this feast still occur as a remembrance?
11. How can we be encouraged today through this scripture passage?
Live It Out: Jesus is the fulfillment of the Passover.
The lamb was perfect, shared, and sacrificed. Read Matthew 26:28. In the same way that God passed over the people of Israel because of theblood of spotless lambs, God’s judgment passes over us on account of Christ’s blood. How do werehearse and remember this great truth of the gospel, both personally and collectively?
