"Because of the intensity of their opposition, I believe the rendering 'came up to them' in verse one is an understatement. They came stomping up to Peter and John, seizing them and putting them in jail for the night... they would hold them in confinement until they could hear their case in the morning. We might therefore expect that when these religious leaders... seized Peter and John and led them off to jail, that those in the crowd would be reluctant to identify with Jesus and His apostles.
